2014 Newsletter 3

May, 2014

New Teachers
We have hired two wonderful new teachers and confirmed two CRTs, Maria Hohlweg and Pauline Rogan.

In this newsletter we introduce Lisa-Marie Schneehage who is into her third week with the GSS already. Lisa-Marie is currently studying at Monash University and is employed at Hillcrest Christian College where she teaches German to Preps, Year 2s and 3s two days a week and is a CRT Generalist teacher the rest of the week. Lisa-Marie was a German assistant at Carrum Primary earlier in her career, as well as an assistant in the Grade 5/6 Classrooms. She had the pleasure of supervising the completion of a German filmmaking project at Carrum.

Help Needed with DVDs
Many thanks to Tamsin who continues on a fortnightly basis to keep the DVD lending library operating. Unfortunately this year we have farewelled Ingrid who used to share this role.

In order to ensure that the table can be a permanent fixture a parent is required for alternate weeks with Tamsin. This is only a small role that involves setting up 15 to 30 minutes before school finishes every second week. Please speak to Tamsin or a committee member if you are available to contribute in this way.

Fit in Deutsch
Fit in Deutsch is an internationally-recognised examination administered by the Goethe Institut. Once again our school will be participating with students in Years 6, 7, 8 and 9 sitting the test; read about level 1 and level 2. Last year our students did uniformly well and found it a rewarding experience. The GSS is covering the cost which is $45 per student. The written test will be held on the 9th of August and the oral test on the 16th of August.

Fees
Thank you to the majority of parents who have paid their fees on time. Unfortunately there are some still outstanding. If this refers to you please follow up with Stephanie as soon as possible.

We would also like to reiterate that if the signed day school form was not submitted last term the outstanding $100 will be added to the school fees. The cut-off for claiming the government rebate has passed.

Language Perfect
The school has registered again for Language Perfect this year (class 6, 7; class 4, 5, 6 and class 8, 9). Parents of children in these classes have been asked to contribute $20 to cover the cost of registration which can be paid in cash to the teacher or on-line via Electronic Funds Transfer.

Our school has already had great success, completing over 5000 questions in the first five days of the Language Perfect Championship.

Judges Needed for the Poetry Competition
Poems have now been received for the internal competition which will be held on the 21st of June. If your child is in a day school class of grade four to nine please encourage them to memorise their poem for this date.

We will need four native speaking judges and also volunteers to help the competition run smoothly. Please see Magdalena if you can assist in this way.

On the morning of the poetry competition we will be offering free coffee and pretzels ($2 each) around 9am. So stay around —- it is a great opportunity to support the school, get to know the parents of your children’s friends and enjoy the fresh pretzels and coffee. Please come along!

Classroom Etiquette
Our teachers are committed to creating the best learning environment for your child. To assist with this we request parents leave the classroom once their child is settled at the start of the day.

Lantern Fest
This years’s St. Martinsfest is this Saturday 31. May at the Dreifaltigkeitskirche in East Melbourne. The Laternenumzug, or lantern parade, will make its way through Fitzroy Gardens before returning to the church where sausages, soup, punch, Glühwein and pretzels will be served. Many GSS families will be present. And now, a song.

Professional Development for our Teachers
Our principal, Magdalena, our educational consultant, Rita, and teachers Jill, Jörg and Eleni all attended the annual conference of the Modern Languages Teachers’ Association of Victoria on the 16th of May. This is the most important conference for languages teachers in Victoria. Conference themes included Languages in AusVELS, Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE), Intercultural and Interdisciplinary Language Learning, Immersion and Bilingual Programs and Information & Communications Technology.

Important Dates
The school’s Open Day will be held on September 13th. Please watch out for more information on activities on this day. Pretzels and cake will be available.

We have recently updated the school calendar. That page and the whole GSS website are now mobile-phone friendly, so you can consult the calendar whenever you want wherever you are.
